Bay Harbor, MI – In January 2020, Bay Harbor Yacht Club embarked and broke ground on an expansive project to renovate and refurbish the entire Clubhouse – adding world-class amenities and premier services making BHYC one of the finest private clubs in the Great Lakes Region. The expansion of the Bay Harbor Yacht Club’s space, amenities and services will guarantee a variety of top-notch member experiences year-round. BHYC completed the project in June 2021, unveiling its changes in celebration of the Club’s 25th Anniversary.

BHYC’s renovation project was completed in three phases. The first phase, completed August 2020, included a 7,500 square foot Wellness Center, which has been ranked 12th in Club + Resort’s Top 50 Club Fitness and Wellness Centers since its grand opening. The Wellness Center now offers a full suite of cutting-edge cardio and resistance equipment by Technogym; Group Fitness Studio; Peloton Spin Bike Room; and a 72-course indoor Golf Simulator. In addition, BHYC opened their brand-new Kid’s Club, where junior members of all ages can enjoy games, crafts, and storytelling. The Kid’s Club serves as the hub for all junior member programming and camps.

Phase 2, completed in early-June, unveiled changes to the existing Bay View Dining Room, BHYC’s upscale dining experience as well as the addition of a brand-new Relaxation Spa, where members can enjoy massage therapy and other luxury spa services. Phase 2 also introduced The Grille Room, BHYC’s newest casual, all-season restaurant.

The third and final phase of the Club’s renovation project, completed late-June, introduced the Club’s newly redesigned outdoor amenities. This phase included the opening of BHYC’s new Aquatics Center, featuring a 25-yard competition-length infinity pool, an adjacent whirlpool, and children’s splashpad, as well as renovation to the existing Quarter Deck restaurant featuring an expanded Gazebo Bar and casual outdoor lounge seating, complete with firepits.

Bay Harbor Yacht Club is an award-winning, member-owned social club that has served as the social center of the stunning Bay Harbor community since 1996. Proudly offering exquisite amenities including three renowned restaurants, Racquets Center, private beach, and an active social calendar, BHYC’s rich history of recreation, relaxation, and outstanding services have earned BHYC Elite Status as a Distinguished Club of the World – an award granted to BHYC yearly since 2015. As BHYC celebrates these accomplishments, the Club is also continuously evolving to meet the needs of its members. BHYC serves over 600 members and their guests. Membership opportunities are available.

The astounding agility and power of the Great Lakes 52 series racing will be on display yet again, showcasing local and international talent. While the event first began from generations of TP52 yachts of the Great Lakes coming together to compete seasonally, the races now draw crowds from all over the world.

NORTH AMERICA’S SAILING GRAND PRIX

This year’s event will feature teams based out of both the east and west coasts as well as four teams based locally out of the Great Lakes. Tom Geisler, sailing extraordinaire, referred to the event as “the best Grand Prix racing series in North America right now.” According to Geisler, these teams will feature crew that compete on the international circuit of the Rolex 52 Super Series as the event is a branch off from the Mediterranean-based competition.

Each team will have to be ready to face off in extremely competitive waters. The variation in offshore and inshore racing requires teams to showcase the skill and expertise to control the large 52-foot vessels in a way that allows for precision to cut around buoys and speed to conquer competitors. The inshore racing entails yachts competing in several races back-to-back to showcase quick maneuvering and acceleration. Geisler explained that offshore racing will require teams to sail for extended periods of time over long distances.

CHICAGO TO MACKINAC ISLAND

The teams will travel almost 333 miles from Chicago to Mackinac Island. Racing will kick off with the Chicago NOOD Regatta before competing in a total of seven regattas. The season’s grand finale will be in Holland, Michigan at the Macatawa Championship in mid-September. The yachts will compete as part of multi-race regattas that will feature over 300 boats. However, Little Traverse Bay’s Bay Harbor Cup will feature the series’ only standalone 52 race.

This will be the second year the event will be held at Bay Harbor. Geisler spoke highly of Bay Harbor Yacht Club’s involvement in the event previously. “The facilities were beautiful. The owners of the teams really enjoyed being at Bay Harbor.” Two members of Bay Harbor Yacht Club are owners of two of the racing vessels competing in the series. With each team racing with 14 crew members and 2-3 shore team members, the event is sure to bring crowds.

No matter if competitor, family & friends, or spectator, everyone is sure to be appreciative, as Geisler noted, of “the proximity [of the club] to the lake.”

Few places are more beautiful in the summer than northern Michigan, but at this time of year, we look to the sky to celebrate nature’s beauty. You may spend your days enjoying the spectacular Lake Michigan shoreline at Bay Harbor or picking cherries at King Orchards, but there’s only one way to enjoy a clear, crisp Michigan night: watching the Northern Lights.

The Northern Lights, also known as Aurora Borealis, are a result of solar winds breaking through a magnetic field and colliding with Earth’s atmosphere. These captivating hues of green, pink and purple (sometimes even red) are a rare sight, and Michigan is one of the few states in which they can be seen. While it’s never guaranteed that the Northern Lights will be visible, there are a few factors you should consider when planning to catch a glimpse of this spectacular nighttime performance. Keep reading to learn more about the best times and places to view the Northern Lights in Michigan.

Best Times to View the Northern Lights

While the viewing season runs from August through April, the best months for seeing the phenomenon include April,October and November. You’ll want to be watching the sky between the hours of 10 p.m. and midnight for the best chances of seeing the Northern Lights. It’s also important to look at the predicted weather conditions before your Aurora Borealis adventure. Check the forecast throughout the day to ensure there will be cold temperatures and no clouds. To view space weather forecasts and sign up for aurora alerts, visit Spaceweather.com.

Best Places to View the Northern Lights

When picking your viewing location, you must find a spot with little to no light sources interfering with the sky’s visibility. Although many Bay Harbor residents enjoy the show from their backyard visitors often enjoy The Headlands, an International Dark Sky Park (IDSP), is located about an hour north of Bay Harbor. According to the International Dark-Sky Association, an IDSP is a certified land that meets a “set of guidelines based on land management, size, and sky quality”. All IDSPs meet strict requirements to ensure they are preserving the natural night sky. This makes them the perfect viewing spots for space phenomena such as the Northern Lights.

The Northern Michigan boating scene is second to none, and there’s no better way to get the inside scoop than from a local boating expert. Tom Ervin, President of Walstrom Marine, gave us some insight into all things boating in the area.

Popular Big Water Destinations

“Boating in Harbor Springs and Petoskey is easily some of the best in the Midwest, if not the country. With open but protected space and close proximity to so many boating destinations, it’s easy to see why it’s a hot spot for boaters on large and small craft alike,” said Ervin. “Many are sticking close to home this summer, but day trips are an ever-popular way to enjoy our area. Destinations like Traverse City, Charlevoix, Mackinac Island, the Les Cheneaux Islands, De Tour, and Drummond Island are all in a day’s reach and great places to explore with your loved ones while still being able to make it back to port for dinner.”

Inland Lake Spots

He continued, “In addition to the big water spots, the endless inland lakes like Lake Leelanau, Torch, Lake Charlevoix, Walloon, Burt, and Mullett Lakes are awesome spots to put in for the day. The endless blue skies and sunshine this summer have made daytrips that much easier. And with what is shaping up to be a beautiful fall, we hope you’re able to enjoy at least a few outings before it’s time to turn in for the winter.”

How To Get Out On the Water

Bay Harbor, a coastal resort and golf community that offers a lifestyle like no other, is in the heart of it all. Bay Harbor Lake Marina, just off Main Street in the Village at Bay Harbor, offers slips and docks for easy access to these big water destinations. Fishing charters are also available. Here, Bay Harbor Lake, a stunning deep-water harbor, provides a protected start before you leave the inlet to venture out to Lake Michigan.

Be sure to check for any ramp closures before you head out for the day. Give Walstrom Marine a call for other Northern Michigan dock and ramp locations or if you’re in town, stop by their Bay Harbor location.

An Inside Look

As the social centerpiece of the Bay Harbor community, Bay Harbor Yacht Club overlooks Bay Harbor Lake and is home to over 100 slips. Bay Harbor Yacht Club offers fantastic dining, club activities, events, fitness, pickleball and so much more. Not just for boaters, there’s something for everyone.

The BHYC Cruise Club is one of the Yacht Club’s many clubs within the clubs and is comprised of a very active and adventurous group of members. The group travels to different destinations on the Great Lakes including beautiful stops in Michigan, Wisconsin and Canada. They normally plan four excursions each summer during the months of June-August, with some additional day trips, dinghy rides and other meet ups closer to their home port of Bay Harbor.

In 2020, they explored popular Michigan cities including Traverse City, St. Ignace, Mackinac Island and Boyne City. For their August trip, their original destination was to visit Killarney, Ontario and the North Channel, however with travel restrictions in place due to COVID-19, the “Cruise Captains” quickly changed directions and headed north to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and explored the beautiful natural beauty of the Pictured Rocks, Marquette and Copper Harbor as well as the impressive workings of the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie. Boating, hiking, biking and outdoor exploration provide great options to social distance, while discovering the beauty of the Great Lakes region.

This is just one of the reasons Bay Harbor has become one of the most prestigious private residential resort destinations in the Midwest. Delivering world-class real estate with a lifestyle to match, this community continues to pursue excellence and a one-of-a-kind lakefront experience.

It’s Time to Make Your Move Outside!

After living in seclusion for months on end, people have had more time to reevaluate how they spend their time, and what is really important in their lives.  This “new” psychology has started a wave of outdoor activities, with more visits to parks and waterfronts. After months of isolation, folks were ready to get out and enjoy the great outdoors, and what better way to spend that time than with family in a gorgeous, natural setting.

Boating has never been as popular as it is now, and even boat sales have exploded in the last five months. The 2020 Real Estate market in Northern Michigan has started off a bit different this year, for reasons we all understand. The same applies to the luxury resort community of Bay Harbor, an extraordinary Lake Michigan community that offers some of the finest Northern Michigan properties for sale. While the community is known for an impressive, deep-water marina, championship golf, two hospitality venues, and the community’s social centerpiece, Bay Harbor Yacht Club, no one can anticipate what the “new normal” will be. For homeowners and sellers, all the uncertainty might have them looking to the market for answers, but there is a silver lining of hope shared by Pat Leavy.

Given the drastic reduction in air travel, it might be easy to assume Bay Harbor completely lost rental requests from prospective visitors and buyers. Not so fast. “We are finding that our rental requests have been high because people are trying to escape the suburbs and city. These are the same people who were unable to take a spring break with their family, so they are excited to vacation in northern Michigan,” says Pat Leavy of Kidd & Leavy Real Estate.

While no one knows how persistent the situation will be, real estate remains a long-term investment and many buyers continue to move forward with housing interests.  In addition to the increased rental requests, there is also an increase in inventory within the Bay Harbor community due to downsizing and other life events, and it is evident prospective buyers are willing to travel to northern Michigan to explore and learn about Bay Harbor.  Many homeowners have felt the frustration of being stuck at home during the quarantine and the idea of having a second home or a vacation escape, could spark some transactions in Bay Harbor.

“Sellers need to stay aggressive on their price points to attract buyers. With interest rates being low, it should attract more potential clients to look around,” says Leavy. There are certain life events such as birth, marriage, and downsizing that call for home sales.  Leavy says he is optimistic there will be transactions in Bay Harbor, but the year could be similar to what happened in 2008 and 2009 when the market was tough, but then the community came out of it strong.

While society goes through social and cultural shifts, homeowners are truly recognizing the value of a home and its surroundings. Home is where we eat, sleep, play, work, and flourish with outdoor spaces, patios, and decks becoming a necessity. As safety and a sense of community become more important every day, Bay Harbor continues to lead luxury real estate in Northern Michigan with its distinct personality, the resort lifestyle, and natural wonders. Now is the chance to build and maintain Bay Harbor’s confidence in the market as real estate will be at its height once it shifts back into normalcy. In the meantime, all these silver linings of hope should keep buyers and sellers optimistic.
