adelson family and children enjoy bay harbor

Kendra Adelson is a proud Mom whose family purchased a home at Bay Harbor in 2016. But perhaps it was her daughter Tia, who really shed some light on what makes this lakefront lifestyle so special by sharing her thoughts about growing up in this cherished coastal community.

Tia kicked off the conversation. “We used to have a place in Charlevoix so when I came here there was so much more to do,” referencing the move to Bay Harbor. “I made more friends. We go boating a lot. We swim. We go to the beach. We do a lot of things.”

Kendra appreciates the uniqueness of the Bay Harbor Yacht Club lifestyle. “They have a great camp for the juniors here. They aren’t bored for one minute. They teach them how to sail, they teach them tennis, they teach them pickleball. And these kids are growing up together.” For the family, life has changed. “We come to Bay Harbor after the last day of school, and we go home the night before school starts. We just have our new life up here with these new families, and it’s amazing. And just watching them grow up together, it’s wonderful. So it’s a great place for families. It really is.”

Tia lends her thoughts. “It’s very kid friendly, from my perspective. At the beach you can go paddleboarding, kayaking or you can go on sailboats. There’s a restaurant on the beach. There are fun activities, there’s a playground and that’s not even including the day camp and the Yacht Club Kid’s Room here.”

For those who thought Yacht Club living is just for adults, Kendra would disagree. “They make sure that everything we do is family oriented. We were one of the youngest members to join five years ago, and everybody made us feel welcome from the minute that we joined. And every event that we go to, they love having the kids. It’s just a great place.”

“We always say that this is like this ‘little pillow of perfection.’ Now we’ve had families that have come and stayed with us, who are now Members. So that’s really fun to merge those two worlds. Whether it’s new families that we met up here– some of our best friends and my closest friends now are the families up here. And now they come from all over–some who are year-round up here. It’s wonderful.”

For Tia, her growing friend base is a big part of the attraction. “Our first summer here it was just like back-to-back family. Now, at least three of my friends who stayed up here, have places of their own up here.” And what do they do together? “Well, we just got a new boat a couple months ago, and so we’re still like getting used to it. But we day boat all the time. We go to Fisherman’s Island, Petoskey State Park and sometimes we go to other places to dock or anchor. But our favorite place is definitely the Yacht Club, just because there’s so much to do.”

Mom is thrilled. “When we say, “let’s go on vacation, let’s go to Florida.” “All the kids say ‘No, let’s go to Bay Harbor.’ It’s just cute to watch these little girls. It all started when they were 2 or 3. And now, they are 8, 9, 10. And you’re just watching them walk along the promenade or down at the beach. It’s like this is their home. They own it. You know, we’re just kind of spectators in their world.”

For those wondering what happens after summer ends, the Adelson’s have that covered. “We spent about 60% of our time here and about 40% down state last year. So that allowed us to understand what winter is like. Tia took a few skiing lessons with my husband, and now she’s an avid skier.” And how has this changed the family’s perspective? “Now I feel like we have kind of merged those seasons together and learned what northern Michigan winter looks like. We’ve had a lot of fun with that.”

Tia agrees, “There’s just so much to do. Like my family and I like to joke around, and we say there’s almost too much to do. Like every day there’s a different party or event.” Kendra says “When I ask my kids, whether it’s December or it’s April or its the middle summer, ‘where do you guys wanna be today?’ It’s always Bay Harbor. And we’ve taken them all over the world- this is honestly their favorite place. So obviously we made a good decision.”

For one of Bay Harbor Yacht Club’s newest Members, Kevin Hess, getting his friends from Florida to the shore of Lake Michigan is getting easier by the minute. “Well, you know it’s kind of funny because some of our neighbors from Fort Myers were just here yesterday. They got to see our new home at Bay Harbor…see the course, see the lake, the whole facility. It kind of blew their mind.” For Hess, that’s great news. “We were hoping to have a few more friends from Florida to be able to come up and see us. The way it works is they will tell some of our other friends about the trip, ‘Yeah- we’re at the Hess’s house and oh God you should see the views.’ Pretty soon, I’m sure someone else is going to say, ‘I heard about your house up there.’ So, the word’s going to spread pretty quick.”

As an avid golfer, lake and golf views were high on the list of priorities. “We live on the golf course, and we’re on the 8th hole of the Links Course. So earlier in the summer they were playing golf at 9:45 pm, just finishing up. It’s just amazing.” But when it comes to the views, Hess has other thoughts. “It’s just so pretty, that you tend to gaze out onto the water all the time. It’s a very unique course layout. It’s incredibly challenging, but you know the views are just spectacular. The first time somebody plays up here, it’s like ‘oh my goodness this is ridiculous.’ I never realized how great it was and you know you get used to it. But we just had guests up here yesterday that have never played it, and they were just going out of their minds with how pretty it is. It was a really nice day.

Having visiting guests is one of the reasons the Hess’s bought a home at Bay Harbor. “It was our goal to get up here and relax, but also to entertain. We’ve always been entertainers so we like having company. We started looking late last summer, and we were thinking really hard about waterfront property. Perhaps in Lake Charlevoix or Walloon Lake, but those were pretty difficult to find.

Hess saw the advantage to living in Bay Harbor. “We saw some really attractive homes in Bay Harbor, and you know the price points were a little better for us than they were on the lakefront property. We tend to get a lot of visitors, and we bought for that reason. It was one big advantage — we could get a lot more bedrooms and a lot more house for the money than we could on other lakefront properties.”

Sitting down with Brett and Abby Mumy is quite exciting. The delightful couple and their two young children were eagerly awaiting the arrival of their newest sibling which may require a little more room on the yacht. “We’ve been a Member at the Yacht Club for the last 3 1/2 years,” Brett explains. “I think the first time we came, we stayed at the Inn for our anniversary 8 or 9 years ago now. And we fell in love with the area, and ever since we’ve been coming up.”

For Abby, it’s been quite an adventure “We were camping and kind of stumbled upon Bay Harbor Village. Later we discovered Brett worked with a Member here, so that’s how we kind of got involved with the Yacht Club.”

For the growing family from the Grand Rapids area, weekend time together takes a high priority. “We usually we shoot up on Thursday and stay for the long weekend. Depending on weather, we come home on Sunday or push it to Monday as much as possible,” explains Brett. “That’s one of my favorite parts that I’ve enjoyed here. We meet a lot of people. The kids make friends that they get sad to see leave at the end of summer. It’s kind of like a reunion every spring or late Spring when everybody starts back up here.”

For Abby, the surroundings are equally engaging. “I always say we have one of the best views. It’s beautiful.” The avid boaters were also drawn to the Caribbean blue water that you expect in the Florida Keys. Brett tells us “It’s freshwater so it’s a lot easier on the boat, and it’s always a little bit more refreshing. I think that’s one of our favorite things is kind of exploring. It’s like the going to the same place that we traveled to by car, by boat is it’s kind of an adventure.”

Together they take fun day trips. “We’ll go to Oyster Bay for portion of the day, and then go grab lunch somewhere on the way back. Or stop over to Harbor Springs….it’s actually quicker by boat than by car to go over to Harbor for lunch or dinner,” adds Brett.

For Abby, it’s the Club environment for her children that’s a big draw. “I love the environment. They go into the Kid’s Club in the mornings, and it’s good for all ages. I like how they have activities and fun adventures, even tennis. And it’s all in one place.”

At Bay Harbor Yacht Club, the kids are always in a protected environment with the lifeguards on duty. “We can let our guard down I think a little bit more than most places when we’re in that similar situation. It’s nice because we can get food and drinks at The Beach Club too. We’re friends with a number of Legacy Members who are second generation families at Bay Harbor,” adds Brett. “They talk about how when they grew up here there were very few children, and now it’s like a complete switch. Even over the last three or four years since we’ve been here, the number of children and young families has like tripled or more. So, there’s a lot of life and a lot of energy always going on. The people here make the atmosphere so much fun. There’s always something to do. You don’t have to leave.”

The astounding agility and power of the Great Lakes 52 series racing will be on display yet again, showcasing local and international talent. While the event first began from generations of TP52 yachts of the Great Lakes coming together to compete seasonally, the races now draw crowds from all over the world.

NORTH AMERICA’S SAILING GRAND PRIX

This year’s event will feature teams based out of both the east and west coasts as well as four teams based locally out of the Great Lakes. Tom Geisler, sailing extraordinaire, referred to the event as “the best Grand Prix racing series in North America right now.” According to Geisler, these teams will feature crew that compete on the international circuit of the Rolex 52 Super Series as the event is a branch off from the Mediterranean-based competition.

Each team will have to be ready to face off in extremely competitive waters. The variation in offshore and inshore racing requires teams to showcase the skill and expertise to control the large 52-foot vessels in a way that allows for precision to cut around buoys and speed to conquer competitors. The inshore racing entails yachts competing in several races back-to-back to showcase quick maneuvering and acceleration. Geisler explained that offshore racing will require teams to sail for extended periods of time over long distances.

CHICAGO TO MACKINAC ISLAND

The teams will travel almost 333 miles from Chicago to Mackinac Island. Racing will kick off with the Chicago NOOD Regatta before competing in a total of seven regattas. The season’s grand finale will be in Holland, Michigan at the Macatawa Championship in mid-September. The yachts will compete as part of multi-race regattas that will feature over 300 boats. However, Little Traverse Bay’s Bay Harbor Cup will feature the series’ only standalone 52 race.

This will be the second year the event will be held at Bay Harbor. Geisler spoke highly of Bay Harbor Yacht Club’s involvement in the event previously. “The facilities were beautiful. The owners of the teams really enjoyed being at Bay Harbor.” Two members of Bay Harbor Yacht Club are owners of two of the racing vessels competing in the series. With each team racing with 14 crew members and 2-3 shore team members, the event is sure to bring crowds.

No matter if competitor, family & friends, or spectator, everyone is sure to be appreciative, as Geisler noted, of “the proximity [of the club] to the lake.”
