Summertime brings an excellent fishing season, especially on Lake Michigan and near Bay Harbor. The lake, rivers, and bays are teeming with life. “The warm weather and unique ecosystems of the area are making this year’s fishing season especially active,” said Kathleen Muneio, General Manager of the Bay Harbor Yacht Club. “Anglers should get ready to pull in some of their biggest catches of the season, especially near Lake Petoskey.” No time to wait before fishing season ends-grab your gear, make sure that your fishing license is up to date, and read on to see what the fishing forecast has in store!

Harbor Springs:

Anglers have been busy in Harbor Springs with all kinds of bites recently. While smallmouth bass anglers have been having luck on the Harbor Springs side of the bay, many people have reported more activity in Harbor Point north. An abundance of lake trout has recently been reported here. Ciscoes are also still being caught in Harbor Point and into the bay as well.

Charlevoix:

While ciscoes are starting to slow down in the channel area here, anglers don’t mind the quiet. It’s almost the start of smallmouth bite in this area. If you’re looking for lake trout, try north of North Point.

Kalkaska County:

Pickerel Lake is relatively calm right now, but bluegill and walleye have been reported here. Lake Skegemog is teeming with large and smallmouth bass about now.

Traverse City:

Anywhere you throw your lure here, it’s sure to catch a fish. Lake trout were recently reported in East Bay and West Bay after a slower start here. Anglers have also been seeing perch in Sutton’s Bay. Boardman River is also reporting lots of rock bass and panfish near the dam.

Petoskey:

Here, the water temperature is perfect for trout right now. Lots have been reported from trollers who were moving from the break wall to Bay Harbor. Bear River is reporting possible steelhead near the dam, but even if you don’t get any, there’s plenty of smallmouth rock bass, catfish, and bullhead to go around.

Part of being successful when fishing is knowing where to drop a line, and areas such as Little Traverse Bay are currently seeing some of their best fishing right now. The Bay Harbor Lake Marina hosts over a hundred slips for you to dock your boat when you’re ready for a break. Or, head that way to grab a charter. There are some great ones that leave from the marina and take anglers throughout north Lake Michigan to catch some of the best bigmouth, trout, and panfish found in the area, among others.

Members at the Bay Harbor Yacht Club experience the lake the best. Catering especially to boaters, the Club, known for receiving the Distinguished Emerald Award from Distinguished Clubs by Boardroom Magazine, provides over 100 private slips to accommodate yachts up to 200 feet. Four restaurants, a private beachfront with a sand volleyball court and cabanas, a spa, and other amenities serve to entertain in this club, alongside a full calendar of activities.
