As the days grow cooler, the residents of Bay Harbor begin to prepare for another season of fun activities. Just because the Lake Michigan waters are growing colder, doesn’t mean the fun has to come to an end. In fact, the residents of Bay Harbor look forward to many fall and winter activities all year long. Northern Michigan’s four seasons mean a wide variety of activities waiting to be enjoyed.
Northern Michigan’s prime location near the Great Lakes and the mountains create the perfect environment for fall foliage viewing, keeping the leaves up longer and letting viewers watch the color changing action unfold before their eyes. One of the best ways to watch the leaves change color is by driving down M-119 to Petoskey aka The Tunnel of Trees. Scenes of trees changing their color and lakefront landscapes speed by the car window. Peak season generally occurs around mid-October.
When the first frost coats the ground, kids get excited and everyone breaks out their snow gear. Winters in Bay Harbor mean sledding, skiing, and all the snow fun that you can handle! The nearby Boyne Mountains Resort offers skiing and snowboarding classes for beginners ranging from young kids to older adults. If that’s not your pace, try snow tubing down a gentle slope, or speeding through the snow on a snowmobile!
Grab all of the necessary equipment (augers, rods, ice huts, and coolers) and a fishing buddy and get going. Just because the snow is out doesn’t mean that the fish are asleep. You’ll wake up trout, steeleye, and salmon, among others, in the lakes surrounding Bay Harbor!
Snow Shoeing & Cross Country Skiing
For those who want to kick back and enjoy nature’s beauty at their own pace, snowshoeing is the way to go. Great for kids who want to get out but aren’t big enough for more extreme sports, and for adults who want to see the natural area, this is an easy sport that everyone can get involved in. The area surrounding Bay Harbor offers lots of trails to hike and ski through that take you through the forests and snow-covered land of Michigan.
